INEC Releases Official Timetable for 2027 General Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally unveiled the timetable and schedule of activities for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made at a press conference in Abuja by the Commission’s Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, who emphasized that the release was in strict compliance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended).
Key Election Dates
According to the timetable, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will take place on Saturday, February 20, 2027. Two weeks later, on Saturday, March 6, 2027, the Governorship and State Assembly elections will be conducted nationwide.
Electoral Activities
The schedule outlines a comprehensive series of electoral activities leading up to the polls. Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will commence in April 2026 and run until January 2027, giving eligible citizens ample time to register, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), transfer their registration to new polling units, or update personal details.
Clarification on Earlier Reports
Professor Amupitan dismissed earlier claims that INEC had prematurely released the timetable, stressing that the official announcement was made only after due process had been followed. He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to transparency, credibility, and adherence to constitutional timelines.
Significance
The release of the timetable provides clarity for political parties, civil society organizations, and the electorate, enabling them to prepare adequately for the electoral process. It also signals the beginning of Nigeria’s journey toward another pivotal democratic exercise, with voter registration and political campaigns expected to intensify in the months ahead.
