The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria: A Voice of Unity and Faith

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) stands as the collective body of Catholic bishops across the nation, representing more than thirty million faithful spread throughout Nigeria’s thirty-six states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Established formally in 1977, the CBCN embodies the collegial spirit of the episcopacy, serving as a forum where bishops, archbishops, and cardinals unite in communion with the Pope to guide the Church in Nigeria. It is both a spiritual and organizational anchor, ensuring that the Catholic Church speaks with one voice on matters of faith, morality, and national life.

The CBCN’s mission is deeply rooted in the pastoral, teaching, and prophetic ministry of the Church. Through its plenary meetings and communiqués, the Conference addresses pressing issues in Nigerian society, ranging from governance and democracy to social justice, peace, and the dignity of human life. It has consistently positioned itself as a moral compass, urging the nation to uphold values of integrity, justice, and compassion.

Structurally, the Conference is led by elected officials among the bishops. As of 2022, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji of Owerri serves as President, with Archbishop Matthew Man-oso Ndagoso of Kaduna as Vice-President, and Bishop Donatus Aihmiosion Ogun of Uromi as General Secretary.

Over the years, notable figures such as Archbishop John Onaiyekan, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, and Archbishop Augustine Akubeze have also steered the Conference, each leaving a distinct mark on its direction and engagement with national issues.

Beyond its internal ecclesiastical functions, the CBCN has played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s public life. It has spoken against corruption, violence, and injustice, while championing education, healthcare, and the protection of human rights.

The Conference also emphasizes the Church’s role as a family, fostering unity among diverse ethnic and cultural groups within Nigeria.

In essence, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria is more than an administrative body; it is a spiritual and moral beacon. Its collective voice resonates not only within the Catholic community but across the broader Nigerian society, reminding the nation of the enduring values of faith, justice, and solidarity.
