Nwagene - FG Dismisses Claims of Anti-Venom Non-Availability in Snakebite Tragedy

The tragic death of Nigerian singer Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene on January 31, 2026, following a snakebite at her Abuja residence, has sparked widespread debate and speculation across social media.

Many reports initially alleged that her passing was due to the non-availability of anti-venom at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi. In response, the hospital management issued a detailed statement to dispel these claims and clarify the circumstances surrounding her treatment.

According to the FMC, Nwagene was promptly attended to upon arrival at the facility. Medical experts conducted a swift evaluation and identified severe neurotoxic complications resulting from the snakebite.

The hospital emphasized that immediate and appropriate interventions were administered, including resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the use of polyvalent snake antivenom.

Despite these measures, her condition deteriorated rapidly just before she was to be transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. Efforts at cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other life-saving procedures were unsuccessful, leading to her untimely death.

The hospital’s statement strongly rejected the narrative that anti-venom was unavailable or that medical staff failed to respond adequately. It stressed that the team worked diligently and professionally, underscoring their commitment to transparency and excellence in patient care.

The FMC urged the public to rely on credible sources rather than social media speculation, which it described as misleading and damaging.

The Federal Government, through the FMC, extended condolences to the Nwagene family, acknowledging the profound grief caused by the loss of the young artist. Officials reiterated that the claims circulating online were unfounded and did not reflect the reality of the medical response.

The hospital reaffirmed its dedication to providing quality healthcare and assured the public of its continued efforts to uphold integrity in its practices.

This incident highlights the broader issue of misinformation in times of crisis, particularly when amplified by social media.

While the death of Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene remains a painful loss to her family, fans, and the Nigerian music industry, the Federal Medical Centre insists that her passing was not due to negligence or lack of anti-venom but rather the severity of the neurotoxic complications she suffered.
