INEC Registers Two New Political Parties Ahead of 2027
In a
significant development shaping Nigeria’s political landscape, the Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially registered two new
political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made on February 5, 2026, by the Commission’s National Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), during the first quarterly consultative meeting with political party leaders at INEC headquarters in Abuja.
The two newly
recognized parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the National
Democratic Congress (NDC). Their addition brings the total number of
registered political parties in Nigeria to twenty-one.
According
to Prof. Amupitan, the Democratic Leadership Alliance earned its registration
after successfully meeting all statutory requirements and passing INEC’s
rigorous vetting process. This included compliance with constitutional
benchmarks and administrative standards set for the formation of political
parties.
In
contrast, the registration of the National Democratic Congress was not the
result of administrative vetting but rather a legal directive. The Federal High
Court sitting in Lokoja ordered INEC to register the NDC, and the Commission
complied in strict obedience to the judicial pronouncement.
Prof.
Amupitan emphasized that while the DLA’s registration was a product of due
process, the NDC’s inclusion was mandated by law, underscoring the dual
pathways through which political parties can gain recognition in Nigeria.
INEC has
assured that formal certificates of registration will be issued to both parties
in a brief ceremony. This move is expected to reshape the dynamics of Nigeria’s
political competition as the country prepares for the 2027 elections. The
emergence of new parties often signals fresh ideological perspectives, new
alliances, and potential shifts in voter sentiment.
The
announcement comes at a time of heightened political activity, with debates
around electoral reforms and the transmission of election results dominating
national discourse.
The
registration of these parties adds another layer to the evolving democratic
process, reflecting both the institutional procedures of INEC and the influence
of judicial intervention in Nigeria’s political system.
This
development marks a pivotal moment in the run-up to 2027, as the Democratic
Leadership Alliance and National Democratic Congress now join the existing
roster of parties vying to shape Nigeria’s future.
