Kebbi Fisherman Triumphs at Argungu Festival with 59kg Catch
The 61st edition of the Argungu International Fishing Festival in Kebbi State, Nigeria, witnessed a historic moment when Abubakar Usman from Maiyama Local Government Area emerged victorious with a remarkable 59-kilogram fish catch. His feat, achieved during the main fishing competition at the Matan Fada River, earned him the coveted top prize at one of Nigeria’s most celebrated cultural events.
The announcement of his victory was made public by Sunday Dare, special adviser on media and publicity to the president, who highlighted the significance of the achievement.
Usman’s triumph was not only a personal milestone but also a
testament to the enduring spirit of the festival, which continues to attract
thousands of participants and tourists from across Nigeria and beyond.
In the competition’s rankings, Abdullahi Garba from Argungu secured second place with a 40kg fish, while Nasir Garba and another contestant tied for third place after landing 33kg catches.
The rewards for the winners were substantial: Usman
will receive two vehicles, a cash prize of ₦1 million, and other valuable
items, while the runners-up will also be compensated with cash and material
prizes.
The
Argungu Fishing Festival, dating back to 1934, was originally conceived to
commemorate peace between the Sokoto Caliphate and the Kebbi Kingdom. Over the
decades, it has evolved into a vibrant cultural showcase, symbolizing unity and
heritage in northern Nigeria.
Beyond
fishing, the festival features traditional wrestling, cultural dances, music
performances, and exhibitions of local crafts, making it a multi-day
celebration of Nigerian identity.
This
year’s edition was formally declared open by President Bola Tinubu, who also
commissioned projects in Birnin Kebbi during his visit. His presence underscored
the national importance of the festival, which remains a powerful cultural and
tourist attraction.
The
Argungu International Fishing Festival continues to stand as a beacon of
tradition, resilience, and community pride. Usman’s 59kg catch will be remembered
as a defining highlight of the 2026 edition, reinforcing the festival’s
reputation as a stage for extraordinary achievements and cultural celebration.
