Resolutions of the First 2026 CBCN Plenary

Resolutions of the First 2026 CBCN Plenary

The First Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria in 2026 was more than a ceremonial gathering; it was a moral intervention at a time of national uncertainty.

Meeting in Abuja under the theme “The Common Good and Leadership in Nigeria,” the bishops issued a communiqué that blended pastoral concern with civic urgency. Their resolutions spoke directly to the conscience of both the Church and the nation.

At the heart of their message was a call for integrity in leadership. The bishops insisted that Nigeria’s political class must abandon corruption, nepotism, and self-interest, replacing them with service, accountability, and a genuine pursuit of the common good.

They reminded leaders that governance is not a privilege but a responsibility, one that demands sacrifice and moral clarity.

The plenary also addressed the economic hardships confronting ordinary Nigerians. The bishops urged the government to prioritize policies that alleviate poverty, stabilize the economy, and protect the vulnerable.

They emphasized that social protection is not charity but justice, and that the state must ensure equitable distribution of resources.

Security was another pressing concern. The bishops condemned the persistent violence, kidnappings, and communal conflicts that plague the country. They called for decisive action to restore peace, protect lives, and rebuild trust between citizens and institutions. In their view, without security, neither democracy nor development can thrive.

The Church itself was not exempt from introspection. The bishops encouraged clergy and laity to deepen their commitment to evangelization, moral formation, and active participation in civic life.

They stressed that the Church must remain a beacon of hope, guiding society with values rooted in faith and justice.

In their closing appeal, the bishops reminded Nigerians that the pursuit of the common good is a collective duty. Leaders must govern with integrity, citizens must act with responsibility, and the Church must continue to serve as a moral compass.

The First 2026 CBCN Plenary thus stands as a clarion call: a summons to rebuild Nigeria on the pillars of justice, unity, and service to humanity.
