Tinubu Appoints Tunji Disu As Acting Inspector-General of Police
In the
unfolding narrative of Nigeria’s security leadership, a new chapter was written
on February 24, 2026 as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally accepted the
resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down
citing pressing family considerations.
His departure marked the end of a tenure that began in June 2023 and was originally slated to run until 2027. Tinubu, in his statement, expressed deep gratitude for Egbetokun’s decades of service, praising his professionalism and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture.
Into this
vacuum stepped Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu, a seasoned
officer with a reputation for discipline and operational expertise. By
presidential directive, Disu was appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police
with immediate effect.
The
announcement emphasized that the decision was made in view of Nigeria’s current
security challenges and in compliance with the Police Act 2020. Tinubu also
pledged to convene the Nigeria Police Council to formalize the transition.
Disu’s
appointment carries symbolic weight. Known for his leadership in tactical
operations and his reform-minded approach, he now shoulders the responsibility
of steering the Nigeria Police Force through turbulent times. His elevation
reflects Tinubu’s confidence in his ability to restore public trust and
reinforce law enforcement at a critical juncture.
Thus, the
story of this transition is not merely about a change in office but about
continuity, gratitude, and the hope of renewed vigor in Nigeria’s policing
system. It is a tale of one man stepping aside for family, and another stepping
forward to confront the nation’s pressing security challenges.
