INEC Confirms 2027 Election Timetable is Ready

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially finalized the timetable and schedule of activities for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, setting February 20, 2027, as the date for the Presidential and National Assembly polls, followed by Governorship and State Assembly elections on March 6, 2027.

The announcement was made in Abuja by INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, during an engagement with Civil Society Organisations. He emphasized that despite delays in the passage of the amended Electoral Act by the National Assembly, the Commission has completed its preparations and is committed to ensuring that the electoral process remains on track.

INEC has already forwarded its recommendations to lawmakers, but certain aspects of the timetable may require adjustments depending on when the amended law is passed.

The timetable outlines a comprehensive electoral calendar spanning over a year. Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will commence in April 2026 and run until January 2027, giving eligible Nigerians ample time to register, update their details, or transfer their polling units.

Party primaries and candidate submissions are scheduled to take place within the legally stipulated period, ensuring compliance with the Electoral Act 2022. Campaigns will follow, leading up to the elections in February and March 2027.

Professor Amupitan stressed that the early release of the timetable is intended to provide clarity and certainty for political parties, security agencies, and international observers. It also ensures that Nigeria adheres to statutory requirements and international best practices in election management. He noted that while the Commission is prepared to rely on the subsisting Electoral Act if necessary, the eventual passage of the amended law could influence certain operational details.

This development marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, as the early finalization of the timetable demonstrates INEC’s determination to maintain transparency, credibility, and preparedness ahead of the 2027 polls.

The Commission’s proactive stance is expected to foster confidence among stakeholders and reassure citizens of its readiness to conduct free, fair, and credible elections.

INEC’s declaration that the 2027 timetable is ready signals the beginning of Nigeria’s next electoral cycle. With voter registration set to begin in April 2026 and the presidential election scheduled for February 20, 2027, the nation now has a clear roadmap leading into one of the most pivotal democratic exercises in its history.
