Special Report: Goodwill Message on Eid-El-Fitr Celebration
Issued by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN)
Date: 19 March 2026.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has extended warm greetings and heartfelt congratulations to the Muslim faithful across the nation on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr.
In a message signed by Archbishop Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, President of the CBCN, the bishops commended the discipline of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving observed during the sacred month of Ramadan, describing it as a “compelling witness to faith, self-restraint, and devotion to God.”
This year’s celebration carries a unique significance, as Christians and Muslims in Nigeria began their respective fasting seasons on the same day. The bishops noted that this providential convergence underscores the shared commitment of both faiths to sacrifice, prayer, and reliance on God.
They emphasized that such unity is particularly vital at a time when the nation grapples with insecurity, economic hardship, and deep social divisions. The message called on Nigerians to move beyond mere coexistence and embrace true brotherhood, working together to build a nation founded on justice, truth, and mutual respect.
The bishops highlighted the enduring values of sacrifice, solidarity with the poor, forgiveness, and reverence for God as essential for the healing and renewal of the country.
They joined Muslims in thanksgiving to Almighty God, praying that the fruits of Ramadan would endure by renewing hearts, purifying intentions, and deepening compassion.
Archbishop Ndagoso expressed hope that the celebration of Eid would bring joy, serenity, and divine favour to families and communities.
He further prayed for unity in Nigeria, divine protection for all its citizens, and guidance for leaders in the path of righteousness and service to the common good.
The message concluded with a fraternal wish for a blessed and joyful Eid al-Fitr, reinforcing the CBCN’s commitment to fostering peace, unity, and interfaith harmony across the nation.
