Tuggar resigns as Foreign Affairs Minister

Tuggar Resigns as Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister

Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar has officially resigned as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, stepping down to pursue his ambition of becoming the governor of Bauchi State in the 2027 general elections.

His resignation follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive that all ministers and political appointees seeking elective office must vacate their positions by March 31, 2026.

Yusuf Tuggar, a seasoned diplomat and politician, was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by President Bola Tinubu in 2023. His tenure was marked by efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy, strengthen bilateral relations, and advocate for Nigeria’s role in global diplomacy.

However, his political ambitions in Bauchi State have now taken precedence, leading to his resignation just a day before the presidential deadline.

President Tinubu’s directive was clear: any minister or appointee intending to contest in the 2027 elections must resign by March 31, 2026. Tuggar complied with this order, submitting his resignation letter to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The resignation was confirmed through multiple channels:

- Ministry of Foreign Affairs Statement: The ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, issued an official statement confirming Tuggar’s departure.

- Spokesperson’s Announcement: Alkasim Abdulkadir, Tuggar’s media aide, also announced the resignation via social media, emphasizing his compliance with Tinubu’s directive.

- Public Reactions: Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad acknowledged the development, noting Tuggar’s farewell to the Federal Executive Council.

Tuggar’s resignation is directly tied to his ambition to contest for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket in Bauchi State. His move positions him as a major contender in the 2027 elections, where Bauchi is expected to be a key battleground state.

In his resignation statement, Tuggar expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve Nigeria. He highlighted his commitment to continue serving the nation, albeit from a different political platform, and acknowledged the support he received during his tenure.

Tuggar’s exit leaves a vacuum in Nigeria’s foreign affairs leadership. A successor will need to be appointed promptly to maintain continuity in Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements.

His resignation underscores the growing momentum within the APC as ministers and appointees reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

Tuggar’s entry into the governorship race is expected to reshape political alignments in Bauchi, potentially intensifying competition within the APC.

Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar’s resignation marks a significant political shift, reflecting both his personal ambitions and the broader dynamics of Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

As he transitions from diplomacy to domestic politics, his next challenge will be securing the APC ticket and navigating the complexities of Bauchi State’s political terrain.

The development also signals the beginning of a wave of resignations as other ministers eye elective positions ahead of 2027.
