Senate President Akpabio Endorses Creation of Anioma State, Names Asaba as Capital

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has officially endorsed the creation of Anioma State, proposing Asaba as its capital.

This move, if actualized, would increase Nigeria’s states from 36 to 37 and restructure Delta State with Warri serving as the capital of the remaining portion.

The agitation for Anioma State has been ongoing for decades, primarily championed by leaders from Delta North Senatorial District. The proposal seeks to address issues of representation, equity, and administrative efficiency within Nigeria’s federal structure.

Senator Ned Nwoko has been a key advocate for the initiative, emphasizing the need to give the Anioma people a distinct identity within the federation.

Speaking at the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in Asaba, Akpabio reaffirmed strong legislative and political support for the creation of Anioma State.

He declared that Asaba would serve as the capital of the new state, while Warri would become the capital of the restructured Delta State due to its established infrastructure, including an airport, seaport, oil company headquarters, and government offices.

Akpabio stressed that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to the initiative, framing it as part of broader efforts to promote balanced development and equity across Nigeria’s regions.

The announcement was made in the presence of governors and political leaders from across the South-South, including representatives from Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River states.

This underscores the regional importance of the proposal and signals strong political momentum behind the initiative.

The creation of Anioma State would Increase Nigeria’s states to 37, reshaping the political landscape, Strengthen representation for the Anioma people, who have long sought recognition, Redistribute administrative centers, with Asaba gaining prominence as a state capital and Warri consolidating its role as an economic hub.

If Anioma State is created, it could have far-reaching implications:

- Political Balance: It would address long-standing calls for fairness in state creation, particularly in the South-East and South-South regions.

- Economic Development: Asaba would gain new administrative and infrastructural investments, while Warri’s existing facilities would be leveraged for governance.

- National Restructuring: The move could reignite debates about further state creation across Nigeria, as other regions may renew their demands.

The endorsement by Senate President Akpabio marks a significant step toward the realization of Anioma State.

With Asaba positioned as its capital and Warri designated for the restructured Delta State, the proposal reflects both historical aspirations and strategic planning for regional development.

The coming months will determine whether legislative processes and political consensus can transform this endorsement into reality.
