Makinde-backed PDP BoT Constitutes Reconciliation Committee Ahead of 2027
The
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), under the leadership of
Adolphus Wabara and with the backing of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, has
announced the formation of a reconciliation committee aimed at resolving
lingering disputes within the party.
This move
comes in the wake of a contentious legal battle over the validity of the
party’s national convention held in Ibadan on November 15–16, 2025, where
Kabiru Tanimu Turaki emerged as national chairman.
The Court of Appeal recently upheld a ruling by the Federal High Court that restrained the PDP from conducting the convention, citing failure to properly notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The
Turaki faction, dissatisfied with the judgment, has vowed to escalate the
matter to the Supreme Court. In response, the Wabara-led BoT issued a
communiqué rejecting the appellate court’s decision and resolving to seek legal
advice on the next steps.
Despite
the legal setbacks, the BoT emphasized the urgent need for reconciliation,
noting that internal wrangling and litigations have weakened the unity and
smooth functioning of the PDP as Nigeria’s main opposition party.
The board
highlighted its constitutional responsibility as the conscience of the party
and pledged to take immediate steps to reconcile stakeholders, end disputes, and
restore political stability in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
The
reconciliation committee will interface with legal teams and party stakeholders
to foster dialogue and unity. The BoT also acknowledged the surge in nationwide
e-registration of members, describing it as evidence of the PDP’s enduring
popularity despite ongoing challenges.
Reports
indicate millions of Nigerians are registering daily, signaling strong
grassroots support ahead of the next electoral cycle.
In its
communiqué, the BoT commended Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo and Bala Mohammed
of Bauchi for their steadfast commitment to the party’s survival and the
welfare of Nigerians. It further appointed Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu as
secretary of the board, reinforcing its leadership structure.
The BoT
urged party members to set aside personal and factional interests, stressing
that unity is essential for the PDP to present viable candidates in 2027. It
also reassured Nigerians of the party’s determination to reposition itself as a
credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), framing the
reconciliation effort as a crucial step toward salvaging the nation’s
democratic future.
