Tinubu Defends Reforms, Calls for Unity at APC Convention
At the
4th Elective National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in
Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a defining address that
underscored both his administration’s reform agenda and the need for unity
within the ruling party.
The
convention, which he described as a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s democracy, was
framed around consolidating the “Renewed Hope Agenda” and strengthening the
APC’s role as a vehicle for national transformation.
Tinubu reflected on the origins of the APC in 2013, recalling how its founding members set aside political differences to rescue Nigeria from economic decline. He paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari and other deceased party stalwarts, urging current leaders to uphold the vision of the party’s founders and resist divisions driven by personal ambition. He emphasized that the APC was never intended merely as a platform for political ambition, but as an instrument for governance reform, institutional strengthening, and economic opportunity.
Addressing
criticisms from opposition groups, Tinubu defended the recently enacted
Electoral Act 2026, insisting that it followed due legislative process and
represents Nigeria’s commitment to credible elections. He dismissed claims that
the APC seeks to dominate the political space, stressing that democracy thrives
on credible opposition and accountability.
On the economy, the President highlighted achievements in infrastructure development, fiscal reforms, and investor confidence despite global challenges.
He pointed
to declining inflation, improved foreign exchange reserves, trade surpluses,
and increased activity in the oil and gas sector as evidence of steady
progress.
Acknowledging
persistent challenges in the power sector, he announced plans for new
initiatives, including the establishment of a Grid Asset Management Company to
address electricity constraints.
Tinubu
also directed his message toward young people and women, promising greater
inclusion in governance and party structures. He encouraged youth participation
in leadership and national development, while urging all party members to
conduct themselves with discipline and respect during the convention.
Commending the organizing committee and APC governors for a successful event, Tinubu charged newly elected party officials to lead with integrity and commitment.
He
concluded by calling on leaders to sustain the APC’s growth and expand its
membership base, noting recent defections from other political parties as
evidence of public confidence in the ruling party.
This
convention, therefore, was not only a reaffirmation of Tinubu’s reformist
agenda but also a rallying cry for unity, discipline, and inclusivity within
the APC as it seeks to consolidate its position in Nigeria’s democratic
journey.
