Kwankwaso joins ADC ahead of 2027 elections

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano State governor and 2023 NNPP presidential candidate, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, marking a major realignment in Nigeria’s opposition politics. His defection is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the ADC and reshape the political landscape.

Kwankwaso Joins ADC Ahead of 2027 Elections

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a two-term governor of Kano State and former senator, contested the 2023 presidential election under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Following internal disagreements and dissatisfaction with the party’s trajectory, Kwankwaso resigned from NNPP and began consultations with political stakeholders, culminating in his registration with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in March 2026.

Kwankwaso formally registered with the ADC at his Miller Road residence in Kano, under membership number 000201. His entry into the party was celebrated by ADC leaders, including interim chairman David Mark and other prominent figures.

The move was not just personal; Kwankwaso was joined by a significant number of his Kano political supporters, including former Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo.

This defection is widely regarded as a boost to the opposition ahead of 2027. The ADC, traditionally a smaller party, gains credibility and visibility with Kwankwaso’s national stature.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar publicly welcomed Kwankwaso, describing the alliance as one that could “make power tremble.” Other dignitaries present at the ceremony included Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, John Oyegun, and Rauf Aregbesola, signaling a broader coalition of opposition figures.

Kwankwaso urged Nigerians to treat the 2027 elections with utmost seriousness, emphasizing the need to free the country from misgovernance. He insisted that citizens must register with both ADC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure active participation.

His rhetoric reflects a populist appeal, aimed at mobilizing grassroots support and energizing voters.

Implications for 2027:

- ADC’s Rising Profile: Kwankwaso’s entry could transform ADC from a fringe party into a formidable opposition platform.

- Northern Political Dynamics: As a Kano strongman, Kwankwaso brings significant northern support, potentially altering regional voting patterns.

- Opposition Unity: The presence of Atiku, Obi, and other figures at the event hints at possible opposition alliances, which could challenge the ruling party more effectively.

- Electoral Strategy: Kwankwaso’s grassroots mobilization and insistence on voter seriousness suggest a campaign focused on participation and reform.

Kwankwaso’s defection to ADC is not just a personal political move but a strategic repositioning of Nigeria’s opposition ahead of 2027. With his influence in Kano and beyond, and the support of other opposition leaders, the ADC may emerge as a stronger contender in the upcoming elections.

The development underscores the fluidity of Nigeria’s political landscape and the growing momentum toward coalition-building among opposition parties.
