Tinubu’s Call for Unity and Renewal at the APC Convention
At the
All Progressives Congress (APC) National Convention held last night at Eagle
Square in Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a speech that was both a
reflection on the party’s journey and a roadmap for Nigeria’s future.
His
address was steeped in gratitude, pride, and optimism, underscoring the theme
of the convention: “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope
Agenda.”
Tinubu began by paying homage to the founding fathers of the APC, recalling the bold decision thirteen years ago to unite across political divides for national redemption. He honored the memory of past leaders, including former President Muhammadu Buhari, and emphasized that the party’s strength lies not in numbers but in unity.
He warned
against the dangers of ego, ambition, and selfishness, urging members to guard
against tendencies that could fracture the party.
The
President stressed that the APC was not created merely as a vehicle for
electoral victories but as an instrument for national transformation. He
reaffirmed his belief in a vibrant opposition, noting that democracy thrives on
healthy competition, but criticized what he described as constant attacks on
the Electoral Act 2026, which he defended as a product of legislative scrutiny
and public participation.
Tinubu
highlighted the achievements of his administration under the Renewed Hope
Agenda. He pointed to reforms in infrastructure, fiscal policy, and social
investment, as well as strides in national security and economic stability.
He
celebrated Nigeria’s exit from the FATF Grey List, oversubscription of Eurobond
issuance, declining inflation, and improved investor confidence. Yet, he
acknowledged persistent challenges in electricity supply and transmission
infrastructure, announcing plans for the Grid Asset Management Company to
inject new capacity into the system.
A
significant portion of his speech was dedicated to youth and women. Tinubu
described young Nigerians as the nation’s greatest assets, calling for their
inclusion not as symbolic participants but as decision-makers. He also
emphasized the essential role of women in governance, promising wider spaces
for female leadership within the party and government.
The
President urged delegates to conduct themselves with integrity, reminding them
that conventions are not mere rituals but opportunities for institutional
renewal. He praised the Convention Planning Committee and governors for their
organizational efforts, and charged newly elected leaders to carry their
responsibilities with humility and fairness.
In
closing, Tinubu reiterated his vision of the APC as a growing, inclusive
political force, citing the influx of new members from other parties as
evidence of Nigerians’ trust. His final words were a prayer for the party and
the nation, a reaffirmation of his commitment to unity, discipline, and
progress.
The
convention speech was not just a political address; it was a call to recommit
to the ideals of collective responsibility and national transformation.
Tinubu’s
message was clear: unity is the bedrock of progress, and the sacrifices of
today are laying the foundation for Nigeria’s prosperity tomorrow.
