Grizzly Bear Attack Leaves 11 School Children Injured in Bella Coola
In a
shocking incident that has shaken the community of Bella Coola, British
Columbia, Canada, a grizzly bear attacked a group of primary school children
and their teachers on November 20, leaving eleven injured, with two fighting for
their lives.
The attack occurred while the children, from Acwsalcta School run by the Nuxalk Nation, were on a walk along a trail near Highway 20.
Witnesses
described scenes of chaos as the bear suddenly appeared, forcing the children
to run for their lives. Veronica Schooner, whose 10-year-old son Alvarez was
among the group, recounted how her son was so close to the animal that he felt
its fur. Alvarez, traumatized by the ordeal, saw his classmates and teacher
suffer serious injuries.
The
teacher, who tried heroically to stop the bear, was among those rushed to
hospital with major wounds.
Emergency Health Services confirmed that four victims were transported to hospital, two in critical condition and two in serious condition. Seven others received treatment at the scene.
The Nuxalk Nation issued an urgent warning to residents,
stressing that the bear remains on the loose and urging people to stay indoors,
avoid trails, and seek support at the Youth Centre if needed.
The
school announced closure the following day, acknowledging the gravity of the
incident and expressing gratitude for the bravery of staff and students. Local
authorities, including the Central Coast Regional District, extended
condolences and pledged ongoing support to the community. Chairwoman Jayme
Kennedy emphasized the devastation felt across the region and thanked those who
provided immediate assistance.
The
attack has left Bella Coola in shock, with families grappling with fear and
uncertainty as authorities continue efforts to locate the aggressive bear.
For now,
the community remains on high alert, united in grief and resilience as they
