A New Dawn in Namu: Cloud Energy’s Solar Revolution
For two
decades, the people of Namu in Quan Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State
lived in darkness, their homes and businesses deprived of reliable electricity.
That long night has finally ended with the commissioning of a 50 kWh solar mini-grid by Cloud Energy Photoelectric Limited, in partnership with Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
The event
was more than a technical installation; it was a moment of rebirth for a
community whose economic and social potential had been stifled by the absence
of power.
The
commissioning ceremony was marked by jubilation, as residents celebrated the
return of light and the promise of progress. Namu is home to 50 rice mills, and
the new mini-grid is expected to energize these enterprises, unlocking industrial
growth and creating jobs.
The
Managing Director of Cloud Energy, Engineer Theophilus Nweke, emphasized the
company’s commitment of significant financial and human resources to make the
project a reality. He noted that while the 50 kWh grid is a milestone, scaling
it up to two megawatts is essential to fully drive industrial development
across Qua’an Pan and Plateau State.
The REA’s
Managing Director, Abubakar Abba Aliyu, described the project as part of the
African mini-grid programme, a flagship initiative designed to expand access to
clean energy and attract large-scale investment in renewables. He stressed that
the installation is not merely a power source but a symbol of transformation, lighting
homes, powering businesses, and creating opportunities for farmers and
entrepreneurs. His optimism was echoed by Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh
Mutfwang, who pledged to prioritize renewable energy under his administration,
recognizing its role in sustainable development.
This
achievement is more than a technical milestone; it is a social and economic
turning point. For twenty years, Namu’s potential was dimmed by darkness, but
with solar energy now coursing through its veins, the community stands on the
threshold of a brighter future.
The
project demonstrates how renewable energy can be a catalyst for rural
transformation, offering not just electricity but dignity, opportunity, and
hope.
