Kaduna Anglican Priest Dies in Kidnappers’ Den; Diocese Cancels ‘Stand Up for Jesus 2025’
Summary: Venerable Edwin Achi, Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero in Kaduna State, has tragically died in the custody of kidnappers after being abducted with his wife and daughter on October 28, 2025. In response, the Anglican Diocese of Kaduna has cancelled its major annual programme, Stand Up for Jesus 2025, as a mark of respect and mourning.
The Anglican community in Kaduna has been thrown into mourning following the death of Venerable Edwin Achi, who was kidnapped alongside his wife and daughter from his residence in Nissi community, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The abduction occurred on October 28, 2025, shortly after the family relocated to the area.
Reports indicate that the kidnappers demanded a ransom of ₦600 million for their release. While negotiations were ongoing, the Diocese confirmed that Achi had died in captivity, leaving his wife and daughter still in the hands of the abductors.
The Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, issued a statement describing his death as a “painful loss to the entire diocese, clergy, church family, and all who were blessed by his faithful ministry, humble spirit, and unwavering devotion to the service of God.” The statement further expressed deep sorrow and called for prayers for the safe release of his wife and daughter.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Northern region, also acknowledged the tragedy, emphasizing the growing insecurity in Kaduna and the devastating impact on religious leaders and communities.
In honour of the late priest, the Diocese announced the cancellation of its flagship programme, ‘Stand Up for Jesus 2025’, which had been scheduled as a major spiritual gathering.
The church leadership explained that the cancellation was both a tribute to Achi’s memory and a reflection of the grief currently engulfing the Anglican community.
The event, which traditionally draws large numbers of worshippers, will not hold this year, underscoring the depth of the loss and the Diocese’s commitment to mourning in solidarity.
Venerable Edwin Achi hailed from Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State and was widely respected for his pastoral dedication and service. His death has sparked renewed calls for government intervention to address the worsening insecurity in Kaduna and across Nigeria.
Religious leaders and community members have urged authorities to intensify efforts to combat banditry and protect vulnerable populations, particularly clergy who often serve in rural and insecure areas.
The Diocese concluded its announcement with a message of faith, urging members not to lose hope despite the tragedy. It emphasized that while the earthly ministry of Venerable Achi has ended, his legacy of devotion and service to God remains a source of inspiration.
The church continues to pray fervently for the release of his wife and daughter, as well as for peace and security in Kaduna State.
The death of Venerable Edwin Achi in kidnappers’ custody has not only devastated the Anglican community in Kaduna but also forced the cancellation of one of its most significant annual events, ‘Stand Up for Jesus 2025’.
The incident highlights the ongoing crisis of insecurity in Nigeria and the urgent need for stronger measures to protect citizens and religious leaders.
