FG Delegation in US Countering False Claims on Nigeria’s Security Situation
The
Federal Government of Nigeria has dispatched a high-level delegation to the
United States to address and counter what it describes as misleading narratives
about the country’s security situation.
According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the mission is focused on correcting claims that Nigeria is engaged in religious persecution, a narrative that has recently gained traction in certain US political and advocacy circles.
The
delegation, led by National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, is armed with
verified data and factual evidence to debunk these allegations. Idris
emphasized that the government is determined not to leave any space for
misinformation to stand. He stated that officials are in Washington with facts,
figures, and a clear message: there is no government-sponsored persecution of
any religious group in Nigeria.
Meetings
have already been held with senior American officials, including members of
Congress, State Department authorities, and other key stakeholders. These
sessions provided opportunities to present detailed briefings on Nigeria’s
security landscape, counterterrorism operations, inter-agency coordination, and
efforts to protect citizens irrespective of religion or ethnicity. Idris
explained that extremists have targeted both Christians and Muslims, and that
portraying the situation as genocide against one group is not only inaccurate
but dangerous.
The
Minister further noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu takes the matter
seriously, pointing to strengthened security architecture within Nigeria and
expanded international cooperation on intelligence and counterterrorism.
The
outreach is part of a structured, government-wide response to ensure Nigeria’s
global reputation is defended and that foreign partners base their judgments on
verified information rather than one-sided accounts.
Idris
reassured Nigerians to remain calm, stressing that the government will continue
to address insecurity domestically while maintaining active diplomatic engagement
abroad.
More
follow-up meetings are expected in the coming days as the delegation continues
its mission to present Nigeria’s position clearly and factually to
international partners.
