Tinubu and Erdoğan Pledge $5 Billion Trade Volume Between Nigeria and Türkiye
In a
landmark diplomatic engagement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria and
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Türkiye have reaffirmed their shared ambition
to establish a clear pathway toward achieving a five-billion-dollar trade
volume between the two nations.
This pledge was made during President Tinubu’s state visit to Ankara, where both leaders emphasized the importance of jobs, investment, and opportunities for their citizens as the foundation of this economic vision.
President
Tinubu described the discussions as practical and forward-looking, covering a
wide range of sectors including trade and investment, energy, education,
defence cooperation, peace, and security.
A key
outcome of the talks was the creation of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee,
designed to unlock new flows of capital and deepen Turkish investment in
Nigeria.
Tinubu
welcomed Erdoğan’s recognition of Nigeria’s reform momentum, particularly in
the energy sector, and highlighted the determination to build an inclusive
economy that benefits all citizens, including the most vulnerable.
Security
cooperation featured prominently in the dialogue. Tinubu disclosed plans to
adopt Turkish military training and expertise, deepen intelligence sharing, and
bolster counter-terrorism efforts. He stressed Nigeria’s role in promoting
peace and stability across Africa, while acknowledging Türkiye’s readiness to
collaborate in neutralizing agents of destabilisation in the Sahel and beyond.
This partnership underscores a mutual commitment to strengthening regional
security.
At the
conclusion of the meetings, nine agreements were signed across diverse areas
such as defence, education, media, diaspora policy, trade, social development,
and institutional cooperation between the foreign ministries of both countries.
Tinubu
emphasized Nigeria’s openness to serious partnerships, trade without barriers,
and investments that create shared prosperity.
He
concluded by affirming Nigeria’s confidence and clarity in engaging the world,
reinforcing the nation’s commitment to peace, inclusivity, and economic growth.
This
pledge marks a significant step in Nigeria-Türkiye relations, signaling a
deepening of economic and strategic ties that could reshape bilateral
cooperation in the years ahead.
