Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Dumps NNPP After Weeks of Speculation
In a
dramatic turn of events that has reshaped the political landscape of Kano
State, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has formally resigned from the New Nigeria
People’s Party (NNPP) after weeks of mounting speculation.
His decision, announced on January 23, 2026, marks a significant realignment in Kano politics and potentially at the national level.
Governor
Yusuf’s resignation was conveyed through a letter addressed to the Chairman of
Diso-Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area. In the letter, he expressed
gratitude to the NNPP leadership and members for their support since 2022 but
emphasized that persistent internal crises had made his continued membership
untenable.
He cited
leadership disagreements, ongoing legal battles, and deepening divisions within
the party as reasons for his departure, stressing that his move was guided by
public interest and aimed at fostering peace and unity in Kano State.
The
governor underscored that his exit was not borne out of bitterness, noting that
he remained appreciative of the opportunities and goodwill extended to him by
the NNPP. He highlighted that the growing disenfranchisement among party
members had weakened the party’s unity and created irreconcilable cracks, leading
to uncertainty both at the state and national levels.
Governor
Yusuf’s departure is not an isolated move. He is reportedly leaving alongside
21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of
Representatives, and 44 Local Government chairmen.
This mass
exodus signals a major shift in Kano’s political alignment. The NNPP ward
secretary, Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the resignation, commending Yusuf’s
achievements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment
while lamenting the party’s internal crisis.
Speculation
is rife that Governor Yusuf may join the ruling All Progressives Congress
(APC), especially after his recent closed-door meeting with President Bola
Ahmed Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa. Observers believe this could herald a new
political alliance with far-reaching implications ahead of the 2027 general
elections.
The
NNPP’s rise in Kano was largely attributed to the influence of former governor
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his Kwankwasiyya Movement, which delivered significant
grassroots support during the 2023 elections.
Yusuf
himself was declared winner of the March 18, 2023 governorship election,
defeating APC’s Nasir Gawuna with over one million votes.
However,
tensions between Yusuf and Kwankwaso intensified in late 2025, with Kwankwaso
warning against defections and stressing that the party’s strength lay in its
grassroots base rather than individual politicians.
Governor
Yusuf’s resignation now raises questions about the future of the NNPP in Kano,
a state where it once held dominant sway. Political analysts suggest that this
move could realign voter loyalties, weaken Kwankwaso’s influence, and bolster
APC’s position in the region.
The
development underscores the volatility of Nigeria’s political terrain, where
alliances shift rapidly and party loyalty is often tested by internal strife.
As Kano
awaits Yusuf’s official declaration of his next political destination, the
state stands at the cusp of a new chapter in its political history, one that
could redefine its role in shaping national politics in the years to come.
