Undergraduate takes own life over alleged gambling loss, indebtedness

BBUL Undergraduate’s Tragic Death Linked to Gambling Losses

A heartbreaking incident has shaken the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), in Niger State. A 300-level Computer Science student, Kelvin Danlami, was found dead in his off-campus hostel room in Lapai town.

Reports indicate that he took his own life by hanging, though no suicide note was discovered.

Friends and colleagues described him as a habitual gambler who had been struggling with mounting debts. His financial troubles reportedly affected his ability to pay for essential needs such as school fees, accommodation, and feeding.

Sources revealed that he owed several people and had been under immense pressure to settle his obligations.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Baba Akote, confirmed awareness of the incident and stated that management would release an official statement after internal deliberations.

The Students’ Union Government’s Secretary-General, Aliyu Abubakar, also expressed sorrow, calling the event tragic and extending condolences to Danlami’s family, friends, and the wider university community.

His remains have since been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary in Lapai, leaving the campus community in grief and sparking conversations about the dangers of gambling and the need for stronger support systems for students facing financial and emotional challenges.
