Invitation to the Official Ceremony of the National Teachers’ Summit
The
National Teachers’ Summit 2026, held in Abuja, represents a landmark event in
Nigeria’s educational history.
The summit was convened to honor teachers as the backbone of the nation’s classrooms and to set forth a renewed agenda for educational transformation and sustainability.
The
ceremony opened with the recognition of distinguished guests, including the
Secretary General of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Dr. Clinton Epitibbo,
eminent professors, representatives from UNESCO, UNICEF, and the British
Council, as well as state governors and federal ministers. The presence of the
First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, herself a teacher, underscored
the symbolic importance of the gathering.
The theme
of the summit, “Empowering Teachers, Strengthening the System: A National
Agenda for Education Transformation and Sustainability”, framed the
discussions.
The
Minister of State for Education, Professor Sue Sahed Ahmed, emphasized that
teachers are not only the pillars of classrooms but also the quiet heroes whose
sacrifices shape the nation’s future. She announced the launch of the Edu
Revamp Online Teacher Professional Development Portal, a digital platform
designed to provide accessible, inclusive, and continuous training for teachers
across Nigeria.
The
summit featured heartfelt contributions from students and teachers. A young
student, Sue Belu Aliu, spoke on the theme “Teachers as Drivers of Hope and
Change”, sharing how her teachers’ encouragement transformed her confidence
and outlook.
Mr.
Dahiro Ibrahim Bama, a teacher from a school for the visually impaired,
highlighted the importance of inclusive policies and assistive technologies,
while celebrating the achievements of colleagues such as Sarah Yusuf, the 2025
Maltina Teacher of the Year.
Goodwill
messages from UNESCO, UNICEF, the British Council, and the House Committee on
Basic Education reinforced the global and national consensus that teacher
empowerment is central to educational reform.
These
partners pledged continued support for Nigeria’s education sector, stressing
that no system can rise above the quality of its teachers.
The
summit also included recognition and awards for outstanding teachers, affirming
that excellence in teaching deserves national celebration. The Nigerian Union
of Teachers, represented by Comrade Audu Titus Amber, reiterated that teachers
are “great, no controversy,” and called for sustained government support to
professionalize and motivate educators.
The Edu
Revamp demonstration showcased how teachers can access digital literacy
training, pedagogical modules, and communities of practice, culminating in
certification and stipends. This initiative reflects the government’s
commitment to blending technology, pedagogy, and values to strengthen the
teaching profession.
The
National Teachers’ Summit 2026 stands as a historic affirmation of the role of
teachers in national development. It is both a celebration of their sacrifices
and a strategic platform to chart reforms that will empower educators, inspire
students, and transform Nigeria’s education system for generations to come.
