Jigawa LGA Bans Night Operation After Deadly Boat Mishap
The Guri
Local Government Council of Jigawa State has imposed a ban on canoe
transportation during night-time hours, specifically between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00
a.m., following a devastating accident on River Badin that claimed the lives of
26 passengers.
The tragic incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. when a canoe carrying passengers capsized between Adiyani community in Guri LGA, Jigawa State, and Garbi community in Nguru LGA of Yobe State.
Chairman
of Guri Local Government Area, Abubakar Umar Barde, announced the restriction
shortly after funeral prayers for the victims. He described the accident as
both tragic and avoidable, emphasizing that night travel and overloading remain
major risk factors in water transportation. Of the deceased, three were from
Adiyani while 23 were from Garbi.
In
response, the local government has directed security agencies to strictly
enforce the ban to prevent further loss of lives. Plans are also underway to
introduce modern and safer water transportation facilities to address the
long-standing challenges faced by riverine communities.
Rescue
operations were carried out immediately after the mishap with the help of local
residents, and injured victims were rushed to nearby health facilities where
they received treatment and were later discharged.
Community
leaders, including Alhaji Charo Aminami of Adiyani, urged calm and acceptance
of the tragedy as the will of God, while offering prayers for the souls of the
deceased.
Authorities
have stressed that the new measures are aimed at strengthening public safety,
improving water transport regulation, and preventing a repeat of such tragedies
not only in Jigawa State but across riverine communities nationwide.
