South East APC Leaders Rally Support for Tinubu
South East leaders of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) have formally pledged their support for President
Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term bid in 2027, describing the move as a strategic
alignment for the region’s political and economic future. The endorsement came
during the “Izu Umunne” stakeholders’ meeting in Enugu, where governors, party
elders, and lawmakers resolved to deliver bloc votes for Tinubu.
The Gathering in Enugu
The pivotal meeting, tagged Izu Umunne, was held at the Hotel Presidential in Enugu. It brought together APC governors from the South East, including Imo State’s Hope Uzodimma, Enugu’s Peter Mbah, and Ebonyi’s Francis Nwifuru, alongside prominent party elders such as former Senate Presidents Anyim Pius Anyim and Ken Nnamani.
The event was marked by a unified declaration that the South East would stand firmly behind Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Governor
Uzodimma, who serves as the APC’s South East leader and “Renewed Hope
Ambassador,” emphasized that the responsibility of delivering electoral success
in the region was collective. He urged stakeholders to see Tinubu’s re-election
as crucial to securing the South East’s relevance in Nigeria’s political
future.
Strategic Endorsement and Communiqué
The
leaders issued a communiqué affirming their commitment to unity and progress,
dissociating themselves from activities driven by personal interests. They
described the APC as the most practical platform for realizing the political,
economic, and social aspirations of the Igbo people. The motion for Tinubu’s
endorsement was moved by Anyim Pius Anyim and seconded by Ken Nnamani, before
being unanimously adopted.
The
communiqué also warned against dividing Igbo votes, particularly in light of
former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi’s recent declaration of membership in
the African Democratic Congress (ADC). South East APC leaders dismissed Obi’s
challenge, insisting that bloc voting for Tinubu was the only way to secure
meaningful development for the region.
Developmental Justifications
Supporters
of Tinubu within the South East cited his administration’s transformative
policies as the basis for their endorsement. They argued that the APC
government had opened new opportunities for the region, particularly in
infrastructure and economic empowerment. Leaders stressed that aligning with
Tinubu would ensure that the South East remained central to Nigeria’s
governance and development trajectory.
Political Implications
The
endorsement signals a significant shift in South East politics, traditionally
dominated by opposition parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and
the Labour Party (LP). By rallying behind Tinubu, APC leaders in the region are
positioning themselves for greater influence at the national level. The move
also reflects a pragmatic approach, as leaders acknowledged that aligning with
the ruling party at the center would yield more tangible benefits for their
people.
Let’s Take A Break
The South East APC leaders’ rally for Tinubu underscores a calculated political realignment aimed at securing both regional development and national relevance.
With governors, elders, and lawmakers united under the banner of “Renewed
Hope,” the South East appears poised to deliver bloc votes for Tinubu in 2027.
Whether
this unity will hold against opposition challenges remains to be seen, but the
message from Enugu is clear: the South East APC has chosen to stand firmly with
Tinubu.
