The event, which also featured the public presentation of three of his newly published books, drew an illustrious gathering of Nigeria’s political elite, media stalwarts, intellectuals, and cultural icons.
President
Bola Ahmed Tinubu led the tributes with a heartfelt message, describing Dr.
Abati as a distinguished public intellectual whose contributions to journalism
and national discourse have been both enlightening and inspiring. Tinubu
praised Abati’s versatility, from his early academic pursuits to his tenure as
Chairman of the Editorial Board of The Guardian, and his current role as a
television anchor. He commended Abati’s patriotism and creativity, particularly
highlighting his service as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to former
President Goodluck Jonathan.
The
president also celebrated the launch of Abati’s three books, “Portraits:
People, Politics and Society,” “A Love Letter and Other Stories,” and “How Goodluck
Jonathan Became President”, and prayed for his continued health and inspiration.
Former
President Olusegun Obasanjo, in his address, acknowledged Abati’s steady
progression through the ranks of journalism and public service. He encouraged
Abati to transition from progress to lasting success, emphasizing the
importance of ethical and moral virtues in achieving enduring impact.
Obasanjo’s remarks underscored the respect Abati commands across generations of
Nigerian leadership.
Former
President Goodluck Jonathan offered a deeply personal tribute, recalling his
first encounter with Abati in 2010 during a book review event. He lauded
Abati’s intellect, loyalty, and storytelling prowess, noting that the books
launched would serve as valuable historical references. Jonathan emphasized the
significance of others documenting one’s legacy, suggesting that Abati’s works
provide a meaningful lens into Nigeria’s political journey.
The
keynote address was delivered by the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most
Rev. Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, who described Abati as a rare intellectual gift
to Nigeria. Kukah called for a moral reawakening in the country, urging
Nigerians to reflect on the ethical foundations of governance and national
unity. He praised Abati’s writings for their ability to hold a mirror to the
nation’s conscience and inspire critical thought.
A
comprehensive review of Abati’s new books was presented by Mr. Louis Odion, a
fellow of the Nigerian Guild of Editors. Odion characterized the works as a
monumental intellectual legacy that captures Nigeria’s political evolution,
moral dilemmas, and the author’s creative essence. He highlighted Abati’s
unique ability to blend scholarly rigor with compelling storytelling,
positioning him as a national monument in the realm of public commentary.
The event
also featured remarks from Mr. Ayo Arowosegbe, Publisher of Caltop Publications

publishing three books simultaneously was a rare feat, reflective of Abati’s
brilliance and dedication.
Dr.

guests, describing the occasion as both a celebration and a moment of
reflection. He recounted his formative years at Hints Magazine and The
Guardian, crediting those experiences for shaping his professional ethos. He
also dedicated each of his books to individuals who inspired him, including Dr.
Ibe Achebe, President Jonathan, and his teachers. In a touching moment, he
acknowledged his wife, Dr. Kikelomo Abati, also an author, noting that she had
three books on display at the event.
