CPC Blacklist: Bafarawa Urges Tinubu to Avoid Confrontation with Trump
In a politically charged development, former
Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, has issued a public appeal to
President Bola Tinubu, urging him to adopt a diplomatic approach in response to
escalating tensions between Nigeria and the United States.
This tension stems from President Donald Trump's designation of Nigeria as a "country of particular concern" (CPC), citing allegations of genocide against Christians and threatening potential military intervention.
Bafarawa's statement, released on November 4,
2025, emphasizes the importance of dialogue over confrontation. He advises
President Tinubu to proactively engage with the American government to present
Nigeria’s perspective on the allegations, rather than responding with
hostility.
According to Bafarawa, the longstanding
strategic partnership between Nigeria and the United States in international
diplomacy should be preserved and strengthened, not jeopardized by reactive
measures.
The former governor also underscores the need
for Tinubu to take seriously the concerns raised by the international community
regarding Nigeria’s security situation. He calls for intensified efforts to
combat insurgency and criminal activities across the country, suggesting that
these issues may have contributed to the U.S. government's stance.
Bafarawa believes that addressing these
internal challenges is crucial not only for national stability but also for
maintaining Nigeria’s global reputation.
In a broader appeal, Bafarawa urges all
Nigeriansreg, ardless of religion, ethnicity, region, or political affiliation,
to support President Tinubu in his leadership. He frames Tinubu’s success or
failure as a collective responsibility, stating that national progress depends
on unified backing from the citizenry. His message is one of solidarity and
national cohesion, advocating for a united front in the face of external
pressures.
This diplomatic counsel comes at a time when
Nigeria’s foreign relations are under scrutiny, and Bafarawa’s intervention
reflects a call for prudence, strategic engagement, and internal reform. His
remarks serve as a reminder of the delicate balance required in international
diplomacy, especially when national sovereignty and global perceptions
intersect.
