Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa Confirmed as Agege Local Government Chairman
In a significant political development within Lagos State, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, the son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been officially confirmed as the substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government.
This
confirmation followed the resignation of the former chairman, Tunde Azeez, who
stepped down due to persistent health challenges. Azeez had been on medical
leave since shortly after his administration commenced on July 27, 2025, and
his formal resignation was read aloud by the Leader of the House, Adeshina
Haruna, during a plenary session at the Agege Council Chamber.
Abdul-Ganiyu
Obasa had been serving in an acting capacity since Azeez’s leave began and was
unanimously voted in by council lawmakers to assume the role permanently. His
initial bid to contest the chairmanship in the 2025 local government elections
was met with opposition, leading to his temporary withdrawal.
However, his active involvement in grassroots
mobilization and administrative continuity during Azeez’s absence positioned
him as a natural successor.
Council legislators emphasized that their decision was driven by the need to prevent a leadership vacuum and to maintain momentum in ongoing local governance initiatives.
They also commended Tunde Azeez for his contributions and extended
wishes for his full recovery.
In his
acceptance speech, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa pledged to build upon existing programs
and strengthen collaboration with community stakeholders to enhance service
delivery across Agege.
The
plenary also included a review of the council’s committee structures and
oversight mechanisms, with renewed calls for transparency, accountability, and
rigorous monitoring of developmental projects within the local government.
