Makinde Meets With PDP State Chairmen Ahead of Party’s National Convention
In a strategic move aimed at consolidating unity and reaffirming leadership within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde convened a high-level meeting with state chairmen of the party ahead of its National Elective Convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan.
The
meeting, held on the evening of November 6 at the Oyo State Government Lodge in
Asokoro, Abuja, was attended by nearly all PDP state chairmen, with the notable
exception of those from Imo and Abia States, who are currently engaged in legal
disputes with the party.
The
delegation of chairmen was led by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi of Edo State, who praised
Governor Makinde for his unwavering commitment to party unity and stability.
Aziegbemi
described Makinde’s leadership as visionary and inclusive, emphasizing that his
efforts have not only fortified the PDP’s internal cohesion but have also had a
positive ripple effect across Nigeria’s political landscape. He credited Makinde
with playing a pivotal role in navigating the party through recent turbulence
and fostering reconciliation among its members.
This show
of solidarity comes at a critical juncture for the PDP, which has faced legal
challenges threatening the convention’s legitimacy. On October 31, a Federal
High Court in Abuja issued an order halting preparations for the convention,
citing non-compliance with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.
The
ruling, delivered by Justice James Omotosho, also restrained the Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing any outcome from a
convention that fails to meet statutory requirements.
However,
the PDP secured a counter-ruling from the Oyo State High Court on November 4,
which granted an interim order permitting the convention to proceed. Justice A.
L. Akintola directed INEC to attend and monitor the event, pending further
legal deliberations.
This
legal reprieve has reinvigorated the party’s preparations and bolstered
confidence among its leadership.
Governor
Makinde’s meeting with the chairmen served not only as a reaffirmation of
support for the convention but also as an endorsement of the current National
Working Committee led by Acting Chairman Umar Damagum.
The
chairmen expressed their collective backing for Damagum’s leadership and the
convention organizing committee headed by Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa
State.
As the
PDP gears up for its national convention in Ibadan, the gathering of state
chairmen under Makinde’s stewardship signals a renewed commitment to internal
democracy, reconciliation, and strategic planning.
The
outcome of the convention will likely shape the party’s trajectory ahead of the
2027 general elections, making this moment a defining one in the PDP’s evolving
narrative.
