A New Era at UNIABUJA: Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi Appointed Vice Chancellor
In a
significant development for higher education in Nigeria, the University of
Abuja, recently renamed Yakubu Gowon University, has appointed Professor Hakeem
Fawehinmi as its substantive Vice Chancellor.
The announcement was made during the institution’s 80th Extraordinary Meeting of the Governing Council, held on Friday, November 7, 2025.
According
to the statement released by Dr. Habib Yakoob, the acting Head of Information,
Professor Fawehinmi’s tenure will commence on February 10, 2026, and will span
a non-renewable five-year term.
Professor
Fawehinmi brings with him a distinguished academic and administrative pedigree.
He currently serves as the Vice Chancellor of the Nigerian British University
and is a Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Biomedical Anthropology. His academic
journey is marked by a deep commitment to institutional development and
scholarly excellence.
At the
University of Port Harcourt, he held several key positions including two-time
Head of the Department of Anatomy, Associate Dean, Dean of the Faculty of Basic
Medical Sciences, and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) for two terms between
2016 and 2020.
His
leadership extends beyond administrative roles. Fawehinmi has been actively
involved in professional associations, serving as Secretary-General and member
of the National Executive Council of the Nigerian Medical Association in Rivers
State, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Anatomical Sciences, and President of
the Society of Experimental and Clinical Anatomists of Nigeria. His
contributions have earned him numerous academic and community service awards,
and he is a Fellow of both the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain
and Ireland and the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria.
The
appointment comes after a period of interim leadership at the university,
following controversies surrounding the tenure of former Vice Chancellor
Professor Aisha Maikudi.
During
this transitional phase, the Federal Government appointed acting Vice
Chancellors, with Professor Mathew Adamu currently serving in that capacity.
His tenure has now been extended until February 10, 2026, to ensure a smooth
handover.
Professor
Fawehinmi’s appointment signals a renewed commitment to stability, academic
rigor, and visionary leadership at UNIABUJA.
With his
extensive experience and proven track record, expectations are high for a
transformative era that will elevate the university’s standing both nationally
and internationally.
