Datti Baba-Ahmed Declares 2027 Presidential Ambition
Senator
Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s Vice Presidential candidate in
Nigeria’s 2023 general election, has formally announced his intention to
contest for the presidency in 2027.
Datti’s declaration marks a significant moment in the evolving landscape of Nigeria’s opposition politics, especially following recent developments within the Labour Party.
The
announcement was made at a rally held at the Labour Party’s national
secretariat in Abuja. Baba-Ahmed emphasized that his ambition was not a reaction
to Peter Obi’s recent departure from the Labour Party to join the African
Democratic Congress.
Datti
clarified that his presidential aspiration predates the 2023 election, noting
that he had previously sought the presidential ticket through the Peoples
Democratic Party before aligning with Obi on the Labour Party platform. He
explained that his decision to step aside in 2023 was motivated by the need for
national unity.
In his
address, Baba-Ahmed highlighted that his candidacy is rooted in constitutional
rights, stressing that religion and ethnicity should not be barriers to
leadership. He stated, “Yes, I am a practising Muslim. Yes, I am a Hausa man.
But I am first a Nigerian, and the constitution allows me to contest. I am
doing this because Nigeria needs help.” His remarks underscored his commitment
to inclusivity and national service.
The Labour Party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, commended Baba-Ahmed for remaining loyal to the party despite speculation that he might defect after Obi’s exit. This endorsement reflects the party’s effort to stabilize its ranks and prepare for the 2027 elections.
Baba-Ahmed also assured supporters that he
would strictly adhere to party rules and electoral guidelines, waiting for
official timetables from the Independent National Electoral Commission before
taking further steps.
This
declaration signals a new phase in Nigeria’s opposition politics, as the Labour
Party seeks to redefine its role in the post-Obi era. Baba-Ahmed’s candidacy is
expected to shape debates around leadership, unity, and the future of Nigeria’s
democracy as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
