Wike Defends Security Oversight and Political Loyalty at FCT Media Parley
Earlier today in Abuja, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, held his monthly media parley where he addressed several pressing issues concerning governance, security, and politics within the territory.
Wike began by defending his presence at polling units during the recent FCT area council elections. He emphasized that his visits were strictly within his rights as the Chief Security Officer of the territory, clarifying that his intention was to monitor security and not to interfere with the electoral process.
He noted that he visited only about ten polling units out of thousands, stressing that such limited oversight could not have influenced the election outcome. “As the Chief Security Officer, I have a right to have a view of what is going on,” he stated firmly.
On the political front, Wike reiterated his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. He declared that he would back any candidate, regardless of party affiliation, who aligns with the President’s second-term ambition.
He recalled his stance in 2023 when, despite being a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he supported Tinubu’s candidacy, arguing that other parties had not presented serious contenders. Wike also criticized the internal state of his party, suggesting it had failed to learn from past mistakes.
Turning to governance and administration, Wike defended the procurement processes of the FCT Administration. He insisted that all contracts awarded strictly followed due process and procurement laws. He explained that the government deliberately chose not to run certain services directly, noting that “the government is not a good businessman” and that private sector involvement was necessary for efficiency.
He further highlighted that some project costs exceeded his ministerial approval limits, requiring clearance from the Bureau of Public Procurement.
The media parley showcased Wike’s assertive approach to leadership, blending political loyalty, administrative defense, and security oversight.
His remarks underscored his determination to maintain order in the FCT, support the President’s political future, and ensure transparency in governance.
