Fire Guts BRT on Third Mainland Bridge
On
Tuesday, January 6, 2026, a high-capacity Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle was
engulfed by flames while traveling along the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos
State.
The incident occurred near the Adekunle axis of the bridge as the bus was heading towards Iyana Oworo. Eyewitnesses reported that the fire broke out suddenly, forcing traffic to a standstill and causing panic among commuters.
Authorities
swiftly responded to the emergency. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service
deployed firefighters to the scene to contain the blaze, while officers of the
Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) were mobilized to manage the
resulting congestion.
LASTMA
confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that efforts were ongoing to
extinguish the fire and restore traffic flow.
At the
time of reporting, it remained unclear whether there were casualties. The
disruption, however, highlighted the vulnerability of Lagos’ transport
infrastructure to emergencies and the importance of rapid response mechanisms.
The Third
Mainland Bridge, being one of the busiest routes in the city, experienced
significant delays as vehicles were diverted and traffic was managed around the
affected area.
This incident adds to a series of safety concerns surrounding BRT operations in Lagos. In recent years, there have been reports of collisions, fare hikes, and other operational challenges.
The latest fire underscores the need for stricter
safety checks, improved maintenance of buses, and better emergency preparedness
to protect passengers and minimize disruptions to the city’s transport system.
