Tinubu Appoints Odusote as First Female Director-General of the Nigerian Law School

In a historic development for Nigeria’s legal education system, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr. Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote as the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School. Her appointment, effective January 10, 2026, marks a ground-breaking moment as she becomes the first woman to lead the institution since its establishment in 1962.

Dr. Odusote, aged 54, currently serves as the Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus of the Nigerian Law School. She will succeed Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, whose tenure concludes on January 9, 2026, after eight years of service.

The announcement was made through a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, underscoring the administration’s commitment to inclusivity and reform in legal education.

Her academic journey began at Obafemi Awolowo University, where she obtained her LL.B. degree before being called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988. She further pursued an LL.M specializing in company and commercial law, and later earned a PhD in Law from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, focusing on public law and the administration of justice. Since joining the Nigerian Law School in 2001 as a lecturer, Dr. Odusote has held several key positions including Head of the Academic Department, Director of Academics, and Head of Campus.

Beyond her administrative roles, she has distinguished herself as a scholar, publishing extensively in reputable local and international journals and presenting papers at numerous legal education conferences. She has also served as a visiting scholar at Nottingham Trent University in the UK and contributed to committees of the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Bar Association.

As Director-General, Dr. Odusote will oversee the institution’s academic leadership, administrative management, and strategic direction across all campuses. She will act as the primary liaison between the Law School, the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers, and the Nigerian Bar Association.

Dr. Odusote's  appointment is widely seen as a progressive step toward strengthening Nigeria’s legal education system and promoting gender representation in leadership roles.

This milestone not only highlights Dr. Odusote’s remarkable career but also signals a new era for the Nigerian Law School, where her expertise and vision are expected to shape the future of legal training in the country
