Tragic Multi-Vehicle Crash Sparks Chaos on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
On October 30, 2025, a devastating
multi-vehicle accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, specifically at
Kara Bridge inward Mowe, causing widespread disruption and panic.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the crash involved several heavy-duty vehicles, including multiple trucks and a container-laden trailer. The collision triggered a major fire outbreak and led to a severe traffic gridlock along one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.
According to LASTMA’s official statement, the
incident unfolded when a truck and a container trailer caught fire. Another
truck involved in the crash spilled its cargo, cartons of biscuits, across the
road, further complicating the scene. In a particularly alarming development,
one of the container trucks veered off course and crashed into the bridge
barrier, causing its carrier to plunge into the river below.
This dramatic sequence of events effectively
blocked the entire stretch of road at Kara Bridge, halting traffic and
endangering lives.
The agency reported eight casualties
resulting from the crash. Emergency responders, including LASTMA personnel,
police officers, and medical teams, were swiftly deployed to the scene.
A high-capacity tow truck and a SEMA
ambulance were already on site, and a crane was expected to arrive to assist in
recovering the burnt and damaged vehicles. The responders worked tirelessly to
clear the debris, recover the fallen container, and manage the fire outbreak.
The aftermath of the crash led to a
significant traffic backlog extending from Kara Bridge to Ogunnusi Road. LASTMA
urged motorists to remain patient and seek alternative routes while the
recovery operation continued.
The agency emphasized that all hands were on
deck to restore normalcy, with emergency teams actively clearing the spilled
goods and coordinating vehicle evacuation.
This incident underscores the persistent
challenges of road safety and infrastructure management on Nigeria’s major
highways. It also highlights the critical role of emergency services in
mitigating the impact of such disasters and ensuring public safety during
crises.
