In a
sweeping overhaul of Nigeria’s military hierarchy, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
has approved the appointment of new Service Chiefs, marking a significant shift
in the nation’s security leadership.
This strategic move, announced on Friday, October 24, 2025, is aimed at reinforcing the operational efficiency and loyalty within the Armed Forces amid growing concerns over internal discontent and coup-related speculations.
General
Olufemi Oluyede has been named the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), replacing
General Christopher Musa. The change at the top of Nigeria’s military command
is seen as a decisive effort to consolidate control and rejuvenate the defence
apparatus. Alongside Oluyede’s appointment, Major-General W. Shaibu has been
designated as the Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke assumes the
role of Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas takes over as Chief of
Naval Staff. Notably, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as
Chief of Defence Intelligence, providing continuity in strategic intelligence operations.
The
announcement was made through a statement issued by Sunday Dare, Special
Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication. The Presidency
emphasized that these appointments are part of a broader initiative to
strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture and enhance the
professionalism of the Armed Forces.
President
Tinubu expressed deep appreciation to the outgoing Service Chiefs for their
patriotic service and urged the new appointees to uphold the highest standards
of discipline, integrity, and commitment to national duty.
This
reshuffle comes at a time of heightened public discourse surrounding military
cohesion and national stability.
Analysts
interpret the move as both a response to internal pressures and a proactive
measure to ensure the Armed Forces remain aligned with democratic governance
and civilian oversight.
