A New Chapter in Military Leadership: Brigadier General Nicholas Rume Takes Command of 22 Armoured Brigade in Kwara
In a
ceremonious transition of military leadership, Brigadier General Nicholas
Nemetne Rume has officially assumed command as the 23rd Commander of the 22
Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army, located in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The change of command took place on October 22, 2025, at the Brigade Headquarters in Sobi Cantonment, marking a significant moment in the ongoing reshuffling of senior officers within the Nigerian Army.
The
outgoing commander, Brigadier General Ezra Bawa Barkins, handed over the reins
in a formal ceremony that included the signing of official notes and a farewell
address to the troops. In his remarks, Barkins expressed deep gratitude to the
Chief of Army Staff and the soldiers under his command, commending their
professionalism and loyalty throughout his tenure. He urged them to extend the
same level of cooperation and dedication to his successor, emphasizing the
importance of continuity in operational excellence.
Brigadier
General Rume, in his inaugural address, pledged to intensify efforts against
banditry and other security threats in Kwara, Kogi, and Niger States. His
appointment comes amid heightened concerns over regional security, and his vow
to tackle these challenges head-on signals a proactive stance in restoring
peace and stability across the Brigade’s area of responsibility.
The new
commander’s leadership is expected to bring renewed vigor to the Brigade’s
operations, aligning with the broader strategic objectives of the Nigerian Army
under the current Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Olufemi Oluyede.
As
Brigadier General Rume steps into this pivotal role, the expectations are high.
His military acumen and commitment to duty will be tested in a region grappling
with complex security dynamics. Yet, with the support of his officers and the
backing of the Army’s top brass, his tenure may well usher in a new era of
resilience and tactical precision for the 22 Armoured Brigade.
