ADC Challenges Tinubu to Reveal True Motive Behind Service Chiefs’ Sack
In a
politically charged development, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), one of
Nigeria’s opposition parties, has publicly questioned President Bola Tinubu’s
recent dismissal of the country’s top military chiefs.
The party has demanded that the president provide Nigerians with a clear and honest explanation for what it describes as a “sudden” and sweeping shake-up in the military hierarchy.
The
controversy erupted following President Tinubu’s decision to remove General
Christopher Musa as Chief of Defence Staff, replacing him with General Olufemi
Oluyede, who previously served as Chief of Army Staff. Alongside this,
Major-General W. Shaibu was appointed as the new Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice
Marshall S.K. Aneke was named Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas
assumed the role of Chief of Naval Staff. This near-total overhaul of the
military’s top brass came on the heels of unverified reports suggesting an
alleged coup plot within the country, a claim the presidency has since
dismissed as false.
Despite
the constitutional authority vested in the president to appoint or dismiss
service chiefs, the ADC has expressed deep concern over the timing and manner
of the changes.
In a
statement issued by its spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party emphasized
that while it does not contest the president’s legal right to make such
decisions, the abrupt nature of the move, especially in the context of regional
instability in neighboring Chad and other Sahelian states, raises serious
questions.
The ADC
warned that without transparency, the action could fuel public speculation,
rumors, and conspiracy theories, potentially undermining national stability.
The party
further criticized the government for what it perceives as a lack of focus,
suggesting that the administration may be reacting to the coup rumors rather
than addressing the country’s pressing security challenges.
According
to the ADC, terrorist groups are reportedly regaining strength in certain
regions, while banditry continues to plague others. The party argued that these
persistent threats to national security are not being adequately addressed and
that the reshuffling of service chiefs does not appear to be a strategic
response to these issues.
In its
concluding remarks, the ADC reiterated its commitment to Nigeria’s democratic
stability and urged the Tinubu administration to come clean about the real
motivations behind the military leadership changes.
The
party’s call for transparency underscores a broader concern about governance,
accountability, and the need for clear communication between the government and
the Nigerian people in times of uncertainty.
