Dangote Refinery Expansion to 1.4 Million Barrels Per Day
In a
landmark announcement that signals a transformative leap for Nigeria’s energy
sector, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, has revealed
plans to expand the Dangote Petroleum Refinery from its current capacity of
650,000 barrels per day to an unprecedented 1.4 million barrels per day.
This development, unveiled during a press briefing in Lagos on Sunday, October 26, 2025, positions the refinery to become the largest in the world, surpassing India’s Jamnagar Refinery.
The
expansion project is set to commence immediately, with construction expected to
span three years. Dangote emphasized the scale and ambition of the undertaking,
noting that approximately 65,000 workers will be required for the build-out,
with 85 percent of the workforce drawn from Nigeria. This not only underscores
the refinery’s industrial significance but also its potential to generate
massive employment and stimulate local economic growth.
In
addition to increasing crude refining capacity, the facility will double its power
generation output from 500 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts.
The
upgraded refinery will also produce Euro 6 standard fuels, a step up from the
current Euro 5 specification, aligning Nigeria’s fuel quality with the highest
international benchmarks.
Dangote
further disclosed that the refinery is slated for listing on the Nigerian Stock
Exchange in 2026, opening the door for ordinary Nigerians to become
shareholders in one of the continent’s most ambitious industrial ventures. He
expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support
of the project, which is expected to significantly reduce Nigeria’s dependence
on imported refined petroleum products and bolster energy security.
This
expansion marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s industrial history, promising not
only to reshape the country’s refining landscape but also to elevate its
standing in the global energy market.
