Tragedy in Ogbomoso: Bread Van Driver Kills Two Women in Oyo State
On
Monday, October 27, 2025, a devastating incident unfolded along the Alao-Akala
Memorial Highway in the Randa area of Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria. A bread
distribution van, reportedly speeding, struck and killed two middle-aged women
who were attempting to cross the road.
The vehicle, identified by its registration number Oyo AME 92 XB, failed to stop after the collision, prompting immediate outrage and action from local residents.
Eyewitnesses
at the scene described the van’s velocity as dangerously high, leaving the
victims with no chance of survival. One of the deceased was recognized as a
local food vendor known for selling ekuru (a traditional bean pudding) in the
Osupa area of the town. The impact was so severe that both women died
instantly, according to those who witnessed the tragedy.
Following
the fatal hit-and-run, commercial motorcyclists in the vicinity sprang into
action. They pursued the van and managed to intercept it, eventually leading to
the apprehension of the driver.
The swift
response from these motorcyclists prevented the driver from escaping and
ensured that he was handed over to the appropriate authorities.
Officials
from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived shortly after to manage the
scene and evacuate the remains of the victims.
The
incident has sparked renewed concerns about reckless driving and pedestrian
safety in the region, especially on busy highways where enforcement of speed
limits is often lax.
This
heartbreaking event has left the Ogbomoso community in mourning and has
reignited calls for stricter road safety measures and accountability for
commercial drivers operating in densely populated areas.
