spirited show of support for Nigeria’s female national football team, the Super
Falcons, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced a generous ₦50 million
cash gift to the squad ahead of their decisive second-leg qualifier against the
Amazons of Benin Republic.
The match, part of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifying series, is set to take place at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.
Governor
Abiodun made the announcement via a Facebook post on Tuesday, October 27,
following a warm reception for the Super Falcons at his office in Oke-Mosan,
Abeokuta the previous day. He expressed pride in hosting the team and
emphasized the importance of their visit, noting that it reflects the state’s
growing reputation in sports development.
According
to the governor, the financial gesture was both a recognition of the team’s
inspiring performances and a motivational boost for their upcoming challenge.
The governor’s statement read: “We were delighted to receive the Super Falcons of Nigeria in our office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, ahead of their second-leg WAFCON 2026 qualifier against the Amazons of Benin Republic. In recognition of their inspiring performances and to further motivate them for the task ahead, we announced a support package of ₦50 million to the team.”
Governor
Abiodun also highlighted the significance of the team’s return to Abeokuta,
describing it as a validation of Ogun State’s investment in sports
infrastructure and development. He remarked that the choice of the MKO Abiola
International Stadium as the venue for the high-stakes match underscores the
state’s readiness to host major sporting events and its commitment to nurturing
athletic excellence.
The Super
Falcons, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most successful women’s football
teams, are aiming to secure qualification for the 2026 WAFCON, a tournament
that serves as a vital platform for showcasing talent and promoting women’s
football across the continent.
The
financial boost from the Ogun State government is expected to enhance team
morale and preparation as they face their West African rivals.
This
gesture by Governor Abiodun has drawn attention not only for its generosity but
also for its symbolic value in promoting gender equity in sports and
reinforcing the importance of state-level support for national teams.
As the
Super Falcons gear up for the clash, the spotlight remains on Abeokuta, where
fans and officials alike hope to witness a triumphant performance backed by
strong local support.
