Tragedy on the Nkalagu-Enugu Expressway - Ebonyi Auto Crash Claims Six Lives, Injures Fourteen
In a
devastating turn of events on the morning of Saturday, October 18, 2025, a
fatal road accident occurred along the Nkalagu axis of the Abakaliki–Enugu
Expressway in Ebonyi State, Nigeria.
The incident, which unfolded near the Nkalagu Flyover bridge, involved a commercial Toyota bus and a tipper truck. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash was attributed to dangerous overtaking, a reckless maneuver that led to catastrophic consequences.
Mr. Henry
Igwe, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ebonyi State, confirmed that a total
of 22 individuals were involved in the accident. Of these, six were pronounced
dead at the scene, while fourteen others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Emergency
response teams, including FRSC officers and Red Cross personnel, swiftly
evacuated the injured victims to nearby medical facilities. Some were
transported to Annunciation and Orthopaedic Hospitals in Enugu, while others
received treatment at the General Hospital in Ezzamgbo, Ebonyi State.
Eyewitness
accounts from local residents painted a grim picture of the crash site. One
resident, speaking anonymously, described the Enugu–Nkalagu Expressway as
perilous, citing poor road design and construction as contributing factors to
frequent accidents in the area.
The
collision has reignited concerns about road safety and infrastructure in
Nigeria’s South-east region, prompting calls for urgent government intervention
to improve highway conditions and enforce stricter traffic regulations.
This
tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by reckless
driving and inadequate road infrastructure.
