Traditional Rulers Committee Meeting - Lagos State Hosts Strategic Leadership Dialogue
In a landmark initiative aimed at reinforcing the role of traditional institutions in governance, the Lagos State Government recently convened a high-level Strategic Leadership Dialogue with members of the Traditional Rulers Committee.
This
pivotal event, held at the Protea Hotel in Alausa, Ikeja, marked a significant
step toward modernizing and strengthening the influence of Obas and Chiefs
across the state.
Governor
Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, inaugurated
the three-day retreat themed “Strengthening Traditional Institutions Through
Collaboration for Growth and Peaceful Co-Existence in Lagos State.”
The
governor emphasized the indispensable role traditional rulers play in
maintaining peace, promoting unity, and fostering community development. He
assured attendees of the administration’s commitment to enhancing their welfare
and integrating their leadership more deeply into the state’s governance
framework.
The
dialogue served as a platform for strategic engagement, allowing traditional
leaders to voice their perspectives on governance, security, and socio-economic
development. It also facilitated the review of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Lagos
State, a legislative move designed to modernize the legal framework governing
traditional institutions.
The Lagos
State Ministry of Justice spearheaded this review process, underscoring the
government’s intent to align customary leadership structures with contemporary
governance needs.
Stakeholders from various sectors, including legal experts, community leaders, and government officials, participated in the deliberations. Their collective input is expected to shape reforms that will empower traditional rulers with clearer mandates, improved resources, and stronger institutional support.
The meeting
highlighted the importance of collaboration between state authorities and
indigenous leadership in achieving sustainable development and peaceful
coexistence.
Governor
Sanwo-Olu’s administration continues to champion inclusive governance,
recognizing that traditional rulers are not merely custodians of culture but
also strategic partners in policy implementation and grassroots mobilization.
This
Strategic Leadership Dialogue stands as a testament to Lagos State’s
progressive approach to governance, where tradition and modernity converge to
build a resilient and harmonious society.
