We’ve Addressed Every Request By ASUU, There’s No Need For Strike - FG
In a
decisive statement aimed at quelling tensions within Nigeria’s academic sector,
the Federal Government (FG) has declared that it has fulfilled all demands
presented by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), asserting that
there is no justification for any further strike action.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during a live interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, aired on October 13, 2025.
Dr.
Alausa emphasized that the government has been proactive and responsive in its
engagements with ASUU, stating, “We have addressed every single request by
ASUU; there is no need for this strike, and we are pleading with them to go
back to school. We need to keep our children in school.” He further noted that
ASUU has been the most frequently engaged stakeholder since he assumed office,
underscoring the administration’s commitment to resolving long-standing issues
in the university system.
The
Minister dismissed claims that the government had been slow or negligent in
meeting ASUU’s demands, describing such accusations as unfounded. He reiterated
that the FG had made significant financial and policy commitments to improve
university infrastructure, staff welfare, and academic standards.
According
to Alausa, the government’s efforts include the release of revitalization
funds, payment of earned academic allowances, and steps toward implementing the
University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as an alternative to
the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
Despite
these assurances, ASUU has maintained a cautious stance, citing concerns over
the consistency and sincerity of government actions. The union has historically
embarked on strikes to press for better funding, autonomy, and working
conditions in Nigerian universities.
However,
the FG’s latest declaration signals a firm stance against further disruptions
to academic calendars, urging lecturers to prioritize the educational needs of
students.
As the
nation watches closely, the coming days will reveal whether ASUU will heed the
government’s appeal or escalate its demands.
For now,
the FG insists that the ball is in ASUU’s court, having met every request and
extended an olive branch to restore normalcy in the university system.
